MARYLANDS teenager ALISSA HUNT will fly to the Gold Coast on Saturday to represent Newcastle at the national finals of the BBX KARAOKE CHAMPIONSHIPS. The 18-year-old rose above 130 locals who contested the heats at South Newcastle Leagues Club earlier this year.
She eventually beat 16 finalists in a hard-fought contest to take top honours in the throat-tightening event.
Hunt's rendition of HERO, as sung by MARIAH CAREY, and I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, as sung by WHITNEY HOUSTON, earned her a shot at the national title.
She won air fare and accommodation to attend the national finals.
If Hunt is victorious in Saturday's competition, she's up for a trip to the United States to attend the world finals.
And even better, if Hunt does take out the national title this weekend, she will also perform on a Los Angeles-based cable television show FAST TRACK TO FAME, dedicated to karaoke aspirants.
Hunt began singing when she was 13, starting out in karaoke 'to get my confidence up', before progressing to gigs at the MILLENNIUM under-18s nightclub. 'Karaoke is always a good way to practice and get up there in front of a crowd,' she said.
'But I'd really like to go solo one day and record some stuff and hopefully get a recording deal.'
Hunt is seeking interested musicians to collaborate on original compositions, influenced by R&B vocalists such as BRANDY, MONICA and LAUREN HILL. TE
