SYDNEY funk soul brothers SKUNKHOUR are back with a new single, KICK IN THE DOOR, their first release in a year. Playing on Saturday, December 2, at The Castle, Skunkhour have been chosen to perform at four special morale-raising Christmas concerts for the troops in East Timor mid-December in Dili, Suai, Balibo and Batagarde. Meanwhile Kick In The Door is receiving airplay on TRIPLE J, and is lifted from the band's next album due out early next year. The five-track single includes a cool cover of DEVO'S GIRL U WANT, a smooth soul number - SIDE TO SIDE and two remixes of HOME which was originally released as a single last year.

HIP HOP GIG: SYDNEY 'RnB/garage/hip hop' BROTHER SLAM, will perform at The Brewery, on Saturday, December 2. According to the rumour mill, the group features members from 'nationally and internationally recognised groups'.

FOLK ROCK: NEWCASTLE singer-songwriter TONCHI MCINTOSH returns from the road this weekend for a gig this Friday night at the Northern Star Hotel and a gig on Sunday at Goldbergs Cafe. The talented singer recently spent four weeks recording his debut album with producer SHANE HOWARD (GOANNA) in an ocean-side farmhouse in Victoria. He has also been touring with Aboriginal songwriter KEV CARMODY, conducting songwriter workshops in Walgett and a concert at the NYAGEE festival in Bourke.

CLASSY DEBUT: CLASSICAL music fans have a treat in store for them next month when THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC visits Newcastle during its first national concert tour. The UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE academy will perform at the Conservatorium of Music, corner Auckland and Laman streets, Newcastle on Saturday, December 16. The 16-piece ensemble will perform a selection of VIVALDI, VINE, MESSIAEN, WIENAWSKI and SHOSTAKOVICH. AUSSIE ROCK: A SHOWCASE of top Australian rock'n'roll bands presented by corporate brewers as the PILS SESSIONS will bubble over into Newcastle next week, featuring TESTEAGLES, ELEPHANT GUN and Newcastle's own ENERTIA. The free concert begins at 8pm on Wednesday, December 6.
