Terrific Troupe of Top Tappers Hit Town

Who: Tip Top Tappers
Where: Wesley Senior Citizens Hall
When: Friday November 17, 2000

AGE has not wearied the TIP TOP TAPPERS, a spritely troupe of entertainers from the Mid North Coast who will sing, dance and joke their way around the Hunter this week.

The dozen troupe members - 11 women and one gentleman - are an average age of 65.

On Friday, November 17, the group will perform at the Newcastle Senior Citizens Hall, King St, at 10am, and again at Club Macquarie at 1.30pm.

On Saturday, November 18, the tappers will perform at Merewether RSL Club at 11.30am, and again at 7pm at the Jenny McLeod Retirement Village at Jesmond.

According to tapper MARGOT HUNTER the old-time music shows last an hour in senior citizens centres, 90 minutes in clubs, and are popular with the over-65s.

'It's the kind of music we grew up listening to,' she said.

'Many of our audiences members are in their 80s.'

The songs are accompanied by dances such as 'clogging, old English, stepping out and Irish dancing', as well as a smattering of comedy including a CHARLIE CHAPLIN routine.

Costumes are hand-made by the group's members, and described as very elegant and stunning.

For the past eight years the troupe has travelled as far west as Dubbo and Lightening Ridge, north to Lismore, and south as far as the Blue Mountains and Lithgow.

The Tip Top Tappers have performed at large scale events such as the Sydney Royal Easter Show, and are scheduled to perform at next year's GRAY MARDI GRAS in Gunnedah.
