Plenty of Jazz on Offer at Civic

Who: Chris Barber's Jazz and Blues Band
Where: Civic Theatre
When: Friday March 31, 2000

INTERNATIONAL jazz artists Chris Barber and Kenny Ball will set the Civic Theatre alight on Friday with musical entertainment bound to raise the roof.

CHRIS BARBER'S JAZZ AND BLUES BAND will demonstrate to music fans why the appeal of jazz will never die.

This will be BARBER'S first visit to Newcastle, having visited Australia only once before in 1978.

The English jazz artist said he was lucky to spend 50 years in the music business doing something he loved so much.

'I retired from work at 21 and have been doing my hobby ever since, it's all I know and all I love,' he said.

'I'll be 70 in a month and I don't see any reason to stop or do anything else.'

BARBER and his boys will take the stage first, followed by KENNY BALL and his Jazzmen.

BALL and his Jazzmen are celebrating almost 42 years in the business.

The group are still energetically entertaining crowds with as much enthusiasm as if they began their careers yesterday.

Some of the hits vamped out by the jazz outfit include Samantha and Hello Dolly.

And even after years in the business and a special appearance at Buckingham Palace for the wedding ball of Charles and Diana, Ball and his Jazzmen continue to play.
