It's 'Off, Wrong, Funny'

It's 'Off, Wrong, Funny'

Who: Col Elliot
Where: Toronto District Workers Club
When: Saturday June 24, 2000

AUSSIE comedian COL ELLIOTT would never say anything that is sexist or demeaning to women, but apparently the characters on his live CD COL'S NEW WORLD don't have any such qualms.

'It's a terrible, sexist gag,' Elliott admits.

'But the whole idea of it was it was said by a very insensitive dickhead roadie ('Chooka' one of Col's many characters).

'It's so off, it's so wrong, but it's funny because it's so off, it's so wrong, you know.

'Col Elliott wouldn't say that, but Chooka did. The characters get away with a heap.'

Elliott and his cast of characters will perform this Saturday, June 24, at Toronto Workers Club and Sunday, June 25 at Maitland City Bowling Club.

Next week Elliott will pop up again on Friday, June 30, at Newcastle Workers Club, Saturday, July 1 at Belmont 16 Footers and Sunday, July 2, at Cessnock Supporters Club.

With 20 albums produced in 20 years, 13 of them certified gold albums (more than 25,000 copies sold), there's no denying a market still exists for Elliott's comedy.

'I think it's because people relate to this sort of humour. It's not that clever. It's not deep, you don't have to think too hard about it,' he said.

One of Elliott's character's SLUGGER MULLIGAN, known for operating under a certain brand of flawed logic, spoke to TE by telephone about the GST.

'I reckon it's not going to work,' he said.

'There's 18million people in Australia, but 6million are retired, so that only leaves 12million left to bring in the GST.

'But of that 12million you've got 4million kids, which really only leaves about 8million left to bring in the GST.

'But there's 1.2million unemployed and 2.8million people working for the government. That leaves only 4million people to do the work.

'But out of that there's 3million people working for the shires and councils. So that only leaves 1million people left to do the work.

'But there's 600,000 people in hospital and 398,998 in jail which leaves two people left to do the work.

'And that's me and my manager, and he's an agent and he's going to try and dodge the tax, and I'm buggered if I'm paying for it!'

TE has five COL ELLIOTT PACKS, containing a CD and double pass to the Toronto Workers Club concert, give away.
