Who: The Scansion
Where: Hunter on Hunter
When: Saturday February 19, 2000

GOTH ROCK: INSPIRED by the poetry of macabre romantic scribe EDGAR ALLAN POE Newcastle atmospheric rockers THE SCANSION will play this Saturday night at Hunter On Hunter. The group's name comes from the writer's description of 'musicality of verse'. The group is influenced by THE CURE, THE TEA PARTY, NEW ORDER, JOY DIVISION and THE CHURCH. Members (from left) are DAMIEN JAMES, WARREN EVANS and GLENN WATSON, each living in different parts of the State now, but who have performed in Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra and the South Coast. ROCK REMEDY: NEXT time you walk past that dusty old guitar in the hallway, consider the plight of the East Timorese people who are bored and without music. TRIPLE J reporter TONY COLLINS, on a recent trip to Dili, said that in the absence of employment, recreation and television, the East Timorese are keen to reignite the musical aspects of their culture. Donations can be made at any ANGLICARE drop-off point, or at sites around the country listed on forms available from ABC Shops and Centres.

POP ICONS: TIM FREEDMAN recorded one of his songs YOU MADE ME HARD on his latest LOVE THIS CITY album. This Saturday night 10-year veteran of the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown, BERNIE HAYES, will perform at the Northern Star Hotel with another band SNEEZE featuring TOM MORGAN and NIC DALTON (ex-LEMONHEADS, SMUDGE, PLUNDERERS and GODSTAR). Hayes's quartet recently recorded a LIVE AT THE WIRELESS SESSION for TRIPLE J which went to air in January.

MURRAY GIG: THE man who wrote MY ISLAND HOME for THE WARUMPIBAND in 1987, songwriter NEIL MURRAY will perform a solo gig at the University of Newcastle at lunchtime on Monday, February 21. Murray, who later won APRA SONG OF THE YEAR for the song in 1995, after CHRISTINE ANU re-recorded it, will also head to the Grand Junction Hotel in Maitland on Monday night for an 8pm show. Murray has a new album THE WONDERING KIND out now on ABC RECORDS through EMI.
