CONTEMPORARY jazz group THE UMBRELLAS will spring open at the Gallipoli Legion Club tomorrow night, revealing an array of some of Australia's most outstanding musicians.

Vibes and marimba player ANDREW WILKIE, who wrote the score for DEIN PERRY'S stage show TAP DOGS is a member of The Umbrellas.

Film and television composer PETER DASENT, and founder of the Umbrellas, plays piano, organ and piano accordion.

As a student of the NSW CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC Dasent was encouraged by DON BURROWS to perform his own music, and formed the group in 1985.

Over the years the group has released three CDs. The current line-up features JAMES GREENING (THE CATHOLICS and WANDERLUST) on trombone, pocket trumpet and tuba.

Other members are ANDREW ROBSON (alto sax) and STEVE ELPHICK (double bass, tuba), both of MARA! QUARTET, and drummer TOBY HALL (The Catholics and CLARION FRACTURE ZONE). Singer/songwriter TANYA SPARKE, recently returned to Newcastle, will perform songs from her gorgeous vocal CD DARKWOOD ROAD as well as some new compositions. TE
