IT may sound cheesy but that's because the music of Sydney band MONSIEUR CAMEMBERT is a tad decadent and goes well with some fine wine and energetic dancing.
With a unique fusion of gypsy, klezmer, classical and jazz elements the group performs a continental repertoire that combines traditional French, Hungarian, Russian, Greek and Jewish music with contemporary arrangements.
Local performers will join members of Monsieur Camembert tomorrow night at the Gallipoli Legion Club in a night styled after the GYPSY HOT CLUB of Sydney's Oxford St fame.
'It really felt that Sydney needed somewhere where people could go to hear the sort of music you'd here in a French or European club,' lead vocalist and group leader Yaron Hallis said.
'An intimate candle-lit space, where gypsy hot-club swing could co-exist with Hungarian and Russian gypsy music, French-musette, Jewish klezmer and Argentinian tango - one great big Mediterranean/European melting pot!'
Hot Club specifically refers to the type of 'gypsy-jazz' made popular by DJANGO REINHARDT and STEPHANE GRAPPELLI. Doors open at 8pm, with tickets available for $15 waged and $10 concession. TE
