IF you're old enough to know better but young enough to party, then RETRO EXPRESS at the Hotel CBD is the place to get to.
Every Saturday night the swanky new inner-city venue features live music and a disco.
This Friday night it's the funk and soul of JACUZZI SUIT, with the classic rock'n'roll of CHRIS BATHGATE and band on Saturday night.
Other bands coming up in September include VALHALLA, THE GOOD, DIZI, FRUITCAKE, VALHALLA and LISA HUNT.
Formerly the Casbah, the change of name is completely justified following renovations at the Hotel CBD.
The Hunter St frontage has been opened up to the street, with a cafe-style set of concertina glass doors transforming the once cave-like Casbah into a warmly illuminated, friendly space for drinkers and diners during the day.
In the evening it maintains a cafe ambience. Glass doors separate night spot from the pub.
GURUS CHOICE: ROCK guru MOLLY MELDRUM named them as his 'unsigned hit pick' for July in his column at MP3.COM.AU, and Newcastle rock guru MARK TINSON produced their debut CD which has sold around 400 copies in four months.
The name of this new phenomenon is EQUINIBRIUM, a four-piece melodic metal band, playing this Friday night at The Palais before CRYOGENIC.
The band features PETER MARKS on drums, SAM PETERSON on vocals, MARK LEYSHON on guitar, DARREN BUTT on guitar and HEATH BOLTON-WOOD on bass guitar.
According to Marks, the band plays 'power-house rock, melodic metal'.
'We've done heaps of shows around town, Sydney, further south, Wollongong, Canberra, all over the place,' he said.
All band members moved to Newcastle from Ulladulla this year because of our city's healthy live music scene. Good on ya fellas.
