NEWCASTLE singer-songwriter CAMERON BRACKEN received the kind of surprise any struggling musician would give his weight in sheet music for last month.
Out of the blue a producer from ABC television's AUSTRALIAN STORY rang the 27-year-old to tell him he was the only living musical relation of Australian classical pianist ROGER WOODWARD. The two met and now it looks like Woodward will work with Bracken on his second CD of original songs, after the pair spent some time bonding while listening to songs from Bracken's debut THERMO ACOUSTIC EQUILIBRIUM. For Bracken, who is the only member of his immediate family with musical ability, it was like discovering a missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle.
'We both felt like we were the milkman's, because Roger is also the only member of his immediate family with musical ability,' Bracken joked last week.
The New Lambton musician travelled to Guyra to attend a master class of eighth grade pianists in July where he first met Woodward for the ABC's cameras.
Although he plays piano, guitar and violin, Bracken admitted to feeling out of his depth but Woodward, the subject of the Australian Story documentary which screened in September, made Bracken feel at home. The pair have been in regular contact since the meeting.
The Guyra Musical Society has invited Cameron back to Guyra to deliver a solo performance. Guyra is the site of the Bracken family acreage where the great grandfather of Bracken and Woodward lived, unbeknown to each other.
Cameron Bracken will perform original songs from his forthcoming CD next Tuesday, October 19, at the Acoustic Cafe at The Star Hotel for Blackboard Brackets.
