CONTROVERSIAL media 'victim' SHANE PAXTON became the subject of a book bidding war after last year's NATIONAL YOUNG WRITER'S FESTIVAL, held in Newcastle in September.
In other developments EMMA TOM went on to host her own television show THE LATE REPORT and Hunter designer DAMIEN FROST picked up a gig with a major publisher.
But according to organiser MARCUS WESTBURY little was written about the event in Newcastle, despite being written up nationally by THE AUSTRALIAN and the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. Westbury admits the organisers focused more on 'plugging the event nationally' than in the Hunter, managing to attract some 300 visitors to the city over three days.
This year the NATIONAL YOUNG WRITERS FESTIVAL estimates there will be 1000 visitors to Newcastle when the festival is held here again from September 30 until October 4.
Activities and workshops include a national zine makers gathering and a national student media gathering, as well as forums on community television and radio, television production, net-based media and writing related events and workshops.
Editors, writers and publishers will also be present in a relaxed social environment, with many events being held at hotels and cafes.TE
