TO watch her in action you wouldn't think there was anything in the world that could flatten the irrepressible DAME EDNA AVERAGE. The Hunter cabaret entertainer, fashioned after the BARRY HUMPHRIES creation and former DAME EDNA EVERAGE, has a tongue that can lash an unsuspecting victim at 40 paces.
But what sets this Novocastrian apart from the original housewife megastar from Moonee Ponds is that her creator is less willing to come out from under the makeup and spectacles. . . unless it's for a charitable cause.
The alter-ego of Dame Average was one of the 1million people each year who has used the services of telephone counselling service LIFELINE. Last month the Hunter's only 'Dame' made an appearance at the recent HAMILTON JAZZ FESTIVAL as a celebrity host entertaining diners while raising money for the service.
Beginning this Saturday, May 1 until May 8, Lifeline Australia is asking Australians to do DINE FOR LIFE which is what hundreds of Beaumont St diners did last month.
The organisation hopes to raise funds this week to train its 4500 volunteer telephone counsellors.
The number to call for a Lifeline telephone counsellor is 13-1114. TE
