Funky Debut

Who: Trumpet Head and the Horny Horns
Where: Grand Hotel
When: Friday September 18, 1998

NEWCASTLE'S newest funk band TRUMPETHEAD AND THE HORNY HORNS will make its first full-length appearance at the Grand Hotel on September 18.

The six-piece band is the latest member of Newcastle's growing funk phenomena, drummer JAMIE ANDREI said, and are set to deliver a repertoire of authentic and energetic funk.

The band is TIP MOSES on vocals, JAMIE ANDREI on drums, KEN ELLIS on trumpet, LEIS TISDELL on bass guitar, DANNY HOPPER on guitar and guest saxophonist SCOTT DAVEY. As well as JAMES BROWN, COMMODORES and STEVIE WONDER covers and contemporary bands SUPER GROOVE and BEN HARPER songs, Trumpethead is experimenting with DJ PATSAN on a new sound.

'We're working on incorporating a DJ with our live experiences,' Andrei said.

'We've been working with DJ Patsan, who's doing some scratchy stuff, so while we're still doing classic funky James Brown stuff that's authentic this is giving us a 90s feel laid over that,' he said.

In line with the band's philosophy of making every show a 'complete event', this Friday night will be the first gig in Trumpethead's FUNK SUMO EVENTS 98 series at the Grand.

Andrei said the band was also getting involved with the newest and only funk venue, Moonshine, which will be capturing the essence of British West-End funk when it opens at the Cambridge.
