THE exuberance of fiddle music forms the core of CELTIKA performing this Saturday night at the Acoustic Cafe at The Star Hotel.
The 12-month-old band features the energetic acoustic guitar and lead vocals of GREG BRYCE, one-time frontman for rockers DV8.
With Celtika Bryce has taken a distinctly different path since a decade ago when DV8 played regularly in Newcastle venues.
But rock has left its mark on Bryce whose percussive guitar style provides Celtika with a driving rhythm.
The band's traditional and contemporary material comes from modern Irish artists such as LUNASA, LUKA BLOOM and CHRISTY MOORE, with original songs composed by Bryce, fiddle player CAROLINE TRENGROVE and double bassist LIZ FRENCHAM. Trengrove's County Clare ancestry 'assures Irish music in the blood'.
All members sing, while Frencham's voice, which ranges from powerful and sweet to haunting beauty, provides the Celtika set with more than a few highlights. TE
