GUMBOOT dancing was born in the gold mines of South Africa during apartheid, at the height of the migrant labour system and the oppressive apartheid laws. By slapping their hands on their gumboots and shaking ankle chains, the mine workers were able to communicate with each other. South Africa's RISHILE GUMBOOT DANCERS will perform three shows at Newcastle Civic Theatre from August 10. Shows begin at 8pm from Monday, August 10, until Wednesday, August 12.
Gumboot dancing has survived and developed, springing up in townships and rural areas all over South Africa. The distinctive sounds and movements were married with dance music and hand-clapping. TE
