Love Affair A Mother Of A Start

Who: Wolfmother, Wolf and Cub, Expatriot
Where: University - Bar on the Hill
When: Thursday May 12, 2005

FOR a band that played its first live show only a year ago, Melbourne trio Wolfmother isn't doing too bad.

British music bible NME recently praised the group's performance at the recent South by Southwest Music Conference held in Texas, no doubt sparking what looks set to be the start of another love affair with an emerging Aussie rock act.

Interest from major record labels is hot even though the band only has one EP under its belt.

But even in the eye of the storm, Wolfmother's bass player Chris Ross remains relatively laidback about the whole situation.

Plans are in the works to record an album after the band's current tour and while they have the recording world at their fingertips, Ross conceded he and fellow members Myles Heskett (drums) and Andrew Stockdale (guitar/vocals) would be happy to make the record on home soil.

``We had a look at some of the studios when we were over in LA and, I don't know, we did a really good recording at ABC Studios before and that studio seems really good,'' Ross said.

``I think it rates pretty well to overseas.

``You know, we went to this studio that The Doors and Hendrix, and everyone had been at and we were sort of going, `Wow! That ABC studio was pretty cool too!' ``We'll just go with whatever feels right.'' The Led Zeppelin -style stoner rock of Wolfmother first surfaced in 2000 when the three friends began ``mucking around'' at home and jamming together.

Ross makes it no secret he never had any dream to perform on stage.

``I really had no desire to play live. But once I did it, I loved it,'' Ross said.

Wolfmother's self titled EP, which features songs such as Dimension, Woman, Apple Tree and The White Unicorn, has been getting solid airplay but now the band is definitely looking toward an album release.

Catch Wolfmother playing its first Newcastle show at the Bar on the Hill tomorrow night with support from Wolf and Cub and Expatriot. Tickets are available on campus at Contact or online at www.bigtix.com.au
