FORMER Newcastle lad Tom Jones will return home on Friday to perform alongside Combat Wombat in the all-Australian hip- hop extravaganza, Mindstate. Jones, better known in hip-hop circles as DJ Wasabi, left home in Newcastle when he was 16 to further his music career in Melbourne.

Since then Jones has built upon his skills and reputation to become a full-time working musician.

His talent was already strongly evident before he relocated to Melbourne having been actively involved in Newcastle's live scene playing turntables in the band FunQ and drumming at the Ribbons of Steel Festival. At just 18, Jones set up his own label, Fortknight Productions, under which he has produced five albums including the new album by Labrats. He currently performs with and writes music for several bands including Bad Boy Batukada, Ilzilla and Fortknight. Last year he was invited to remix Waltzing Matilda for comic outfit Scared Weird Little Guys and subsequently performed with the trio at the Melbourne Comedy Festival National Telethon. Jones recently teamed with Combat Wombat on their new album Unsound System and will be there to launch it with them at Mindstate on Friday at the Band Room at Newcastle Leagues Club.

Other acts include Urthboy, El Gusto, Ozi Batla, PasoBionic, Unkle Ho and local act Dopec .

Doors open at 8.30pm and tickets cost $12 at the door or $10 pre sale from threesixtysounds, Ramjet, Volume Clothing, PDMS and the venue.
