WHEN you get along

Who: DJ Phil Smart
What: Escalate 2003
Where: QWB - Queens Wharf Brewery
When: Wednesday March 26, 2003

WHEN you get along to see a set from Sydney DJ PHIL SMART, don't expect to categorise his style.

From deep house and techno to breaks and electro, Smart is renowned for his eclectic choice of tunes.

"These days we're trying to mix it up a lot because that's what Australian audiences seem to want," Smart said. "They like a variety of sounds in one night to suit their different moods or whatever. And for me, as a DJ, that's much more interesting because I like a lot of different kinds of music. I don't just listen to one thing at home.

"I like to mix it up and keep finding new sounds, and I'm grateful that audiences seem to want to do that as well."

Smart first got behind the decks in 1988 while studying at university.

He has since played at some of Australia's biggest clubs and parties such as TWEEKIN, HAPPY VALLEY and HOME and played alongside JOHN DIGWEED, CARL COX and ADAM FREELAND.

In 2000, he was named Australian DJ of the Year at the NATIONAL DANCE MUSIC AWARDS.

Tonight, Smart will play at THE BREWERY'S new weekly ESCALATE 2003 night.

The fun starts at 10pm and Smart will be supported by resident DJs CHRISTIAN PURE and BRETT OK.
