BEFORE performing at the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, ARIA award winner Matt Walker will squeeze in a few dates along the way during his trip up north.

Following the release of his second album Soul Witness, Walker will embark on the short tour with his trio The Necessary Few. Joined by bassist Grant Cummerford of The Louisville Sluggers and drummer Roger Bergodaz, Walker will perform at The Bar On The Hill next Wednesday from noon in a free show.

As well as teaming up with The Necessary Few on Soul Witness, Walker worked on the album with Dave Graney, The Cruel Sea's Ken Gormley and The Necks' Chris Thompson. 'This record's got a couple of guests on it,' Walker said.

'I kind of wanted to make a different record from my first one the same as anyone, you know?'

Regarded as one of Australia's finest instrumentalists, Walker performs an innovative combination of lap steel, acoustic and electric guitar, dobro and harmonica.

But he admits that during the early days of his career, he didn't know what the lap steel guitar was.

'I was doing this gig and this guy I met basically just gave it to me, because I was playing a bit of slide on my acoustic,' Walker said.

'I didn't even know what a lap steel was. It's just one of those weird things.'
