BO Diddley described him as 'one helluva guitar player' and he is regarded as Europe's number one guitarist.

Danish blues guitar maestro Hans Theessink will perform in Newcastle at the Gallipoli Legion Club on Friday night during his inaugural Australian tour.

Theessink is regarded as one of guitar's virtuosos with his ability as a Danish musician to interpret American roots music. His talent has seen him record 15 albums and tour internationally for much of his career.

The singer, songwriter and guitarist's music reflects a deep respect for the old masters but is always highly original.

As an exploratory improviser, he blends his musical ideas and regularly performs at major American festivals including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Theessink first appeared in 1970 with the release of his debut EP Next Morning at Sunrise. He has gone on to release several top-selling titles including Hans Theessink and Blue Groove Live and Hard Road Blues: One Voice - One Guitar. His 1997 album Journey On includes originals and songs by Muddy Waters, Leadbelly and Rufus Thomas and blends blues and roots with gospel, soul, folk, R&B, country and zydeco.

Tickets to Theessink's show at the Gallipoli Legion Club are available at the door for $15.
