Fantastic Funksters Find a New Home in Hamilton

Who: Chi
Where: SJ's on Beaumont
When: Thursday March 15, 2001

NEWCASTLE funksters Chi have earned a reputation around town for filling venues and keeping them pumping from start to finish.

Now their unique brand of jazz, funk and trance has been rewarded with a one-month residency at SJ's Hotel, one of Newcastle's premier original music venues.

With vocalist Jane Tyrrell, guitarists Ben Gain and Tim Moran, bass player Allon Silove, sax player Dan Flanagan, drummer Soren Hillis and Sarah Sherlock on hand drums, Chi will perform every Thursday night in March.

The band will play two sets a week from 10pm. The first will last about 45 minutes and the second about one hour.

The band regularly pack out The Northern Star Hotel and attracted over 600 people to their debut CD launch at The Cambridge Hotel late last year.

The run of gigs comes at an ideal time for the band, according to saxophonist Dan Flanagan.

"Our regular crowd has been hassling us about when we are going to play next,' Flanagan said.

"The next officially booked gig was for the Albion Hotel in May.'

Flanagan said the band will use the gigs to test out some new material.

"This year we are looking at getting a run of gigs in Sydney to gain a bit more exposure,' he said.
