Kings Conquer Diverse Material

Who: The Shuffle Kings
Where: Charlestown Bowling Club
When: Saturday January 20, 2001

Few acts are as entertaining and breathtakingly accomplished as THE SHUFFLE KINGS. Performing at Charlestown Bowling Club on Saturday night the group boasts a repertoire as demanding as it is diverse.

The quartet will provide a spectacle as they soothe with sublime jazz, whoop with rock'n'roll and holler with a semi-acoustic 'busking' set that has to be seen to be believed.

The group covers such diverse material as LOUIS JORDAN, THE VENTURES, BOOKER T & THE MGS and GLEN MILLER. The Shuffle Kings have also released two CDs, LIVE and INSTRU-MENTAL, featuring such original titles as BERTHA THE UNIVERSE, CLAUDE VANJAMME and CONUNDRUM. Members include PAUL BURTON on double bass, harmonica, percussion, an accomplished session player who has worked with PAUL KELLY, DON WALKER and IAN MOSS among others.

Pianist CHARLIE COLE, regularly performs one-handed on the trumpet and recorder while tinkling the ivories, and also roves with an organ accordion in jauntier tunes.

Cole is best known for his work with MOVING PICTURES on the number one hit WHAT ABOUT ME, as well as touring work with 1927, and recording on the FOOTLOOSE soundtrack.

Maitland-born MICHAEL HAWKE, on saxophones, flute, recorders, clarinet and harmonica, is best known for his work with Newcastle's TOTAL FIRE BAND and GREG BRYCE. Dutch-born TAO WANDERS, on drums and percussion, has toured extensively, working in Ireland with STEELEYE SPAN.
