THE Northern Star Hotel will host a blast of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop for the opening night of The 18th Dynasty. The event is organised by Juvarn Thebus who is also responsible for the fortnightly Artificial Intelligence gigs at the Hunter On Hunter.

Opening the night with some funk is Fun-Q, a new original nine-piece group which formed in May.

Juvarn describes the group's sound as 'funk jazz interbred with hip hop' and said the atmosphere of the gig could be compared to the feel of a funky James Brown classic.

'It's the birth of a new music revolution in the Newcastle industry,' Juvarn said.

'It's like the opening of a new door.'

The group uses a variety of instruments including the trumpet, organ, bass, guitar, drums and turntables. DJ Skooby will scratch up a set of trip hop and slowly ease into a hip hop set.

MCs Scotty B and Jahmunji will step up and combine forces to create a hip shaking mix of jungle bass.

Special guest for the evening is former Metabass n Breath member Elf Tranzporter who is known for his challenging political lyrics.

The evening is set to finish off with a drum and bass set.

Saturday's gig will kick off at 9pm and entry is $6.
