Veteran Duo Duking it Out in Upcoming Club Performances

Who: Dukes Of Jive
Where: Nelson Bay Bowling Club
Author: Michael Gadd
When: Saturday April 21, 2001

SINCE the 1960s, Fred Dobs of Newcastle duo the Dukes Of Jive has brought joy to audiences.

He was a member of the original Sebastian Hardy Blues Band with John English. As a classical-trained pianist he can play any style, especially rock and roll and contemporary.

Dobs has performed as part of numerous duos such as Just Cruisin' and Shake It Up and bands such as Tonite We Ride and The Corvettes.

He has done solo work in many piano bars and clubs.

Until recently Dobs privately taught both classical and modern piano and keyboard, and has kept up to date with the latest musical technology - so much so that he now produces the midi sequences used by the duo live.

His cutting sax solos are a feature of the act.

He shares lead vocal duties with his partner, singer and guitarist Michael Ashman. Ashman has also performed as a soloist when he lived on the Gold Coast.

During that time he was a regular solo performer on cruise boats Rani, Sir Henry Morgan and Maranoa, hotels and resorts.

They cover a full range of contemporary and classic rock including Savage Garden, Santana, Chris Issak, Queen, Robert Palmer, Stones, Beatles, Billy Joel, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Elvis, Roy Orbison and Tom Jones. The Dukes of Jive will be performing at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club on Saturday and Lemon Tree Passage Bowling Club on Friday, April 27.
