Who: John Paul Young

When: Friday November 10, 2000

LAKE Macquarie entertainer JOHN PAUL YOUNG has been called up to perform at the closing ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Young, who is scheduled to perform in the Hunter at Wests Leagues Club on Friday, November 10, was relaxed last week at the prospect of performing to an estimated worldwide television audience of 4billion viewers.

'I've never been one to get too carried away with things until they happen, and I suppose I'm just trying to do the same and just take it as it comes,' he said.

Rehearsals for the closing ceremony began last Sunday and will continue in secret this week.

In the past few weeks JPY has been performing under a pseudonym THE JAY PEA COMBO at the Phoenix Club, in preparation for the big gig.

The former Australian King of Pop is unable to reveal which song he will sing at the ceremony due to a confidentiality agreement he has signed with SOCOG.

'They have announced me, but they haven't really said what I'll be doing,' Young said.

There has been speculation that a segment of the ceremony will feature an Australian motion picture theme, but JPY was tight-lipped about the likelihood of him performing Love Is In The Air from the Strictly Ballroom soundtrack.

As well as performing, Young is active in the landcare movement and is an outspoken community activist on issues related to mining in the western Lake Macquarie area. TE
