Shanley a Star in Own Right

Who: Shanley Del
Where: Club Phoenix
When: Sunday May 28, 2000

SINGER Shanley Del, performing this Sunday at Phoenix, may not be a household name in Australia, but in the world of country she's up there with GINA JEFFREYS and LEE KERNAGHAN. The younger sister of pop singer JENNY MORRIS and a star in her own right, Del was nominated for three Golden Guitars at the 1998 Tamworth Country Music Awards.

Nominations included best female vocalist and best album for her CD MY OWN SWEET TIME. In August she told The Sunday Mail that January in Tamworth was 'the one time of the year when I feel like a star'.

'I walk down the street and get recognised by everybody,' she said.

'But it's like that for pretty much every artist.'

In March this year Del was one of several Australian songwriters, including JIMMY LITTLE, MARIE WILSON, GRAHAM GOBLE and MICHAEL SPIBY, invited to take part in a five-day songwriting workshop in North Queensland.

Some of the artists paired with the Australian included PETER BUCK of REM, ANDY SUMMERS of THE POLICE, MICK FLEETWOOD of FLEETWOOD MAC, TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT of THE EAGLES and BEN FOLDS. TE
