Who: Karen Hunter
Where: Northern Star Hotel
When: Friday June 9, 2000

FUNKY sassy, sensual and seductive are just a few of the words used to describe the music of KAREN HUNTER, performing at the Northern Star Hotel this Friday night. Hunter, an eclectic New Zealand performer who plays everything from folk, to funk, reggae to rock, and thrash to jazz, will perform with Australian folk artist PENELOPE SWALES. Swales is returning the favour to Hunter after joining the Kiwi on a national tour of New Zealand earlier this year. Hunter, who has supported ANI DEFRANCO, TONI CHILDS and SUZANNE VEGA, has a new CD recorded called THE PRIVATE LIFE OF CLOWNS.

ROCK HARD: DON'T forget SEGRESSION tonight for THE HOTHOUSE at SJ's Hotel. And next week, those gorgeous doyens of grrrl-rock NITOCRIS, on Wednesday, June 14.

ROOTS MUSIC: WITH an emphasis on 'acoustic-based music with strong feel-good rhythms' four-piece group STOMP BUCKET gets a party started by using tried and tested methods. Playing this Friday night at the Lass O'Gowrie, where the group plays every six weeks, Stomp Bucket performs 'rags and novelty tunes' from the 1920s, rhythm & blues such as BO DIDDLEY, HOWLIN' WOLF and THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS, and country blues and swing by PATSY CLINE, SONNY TERRY and BROWNE MCGEE. The group also performs some Celtic, and contemporary songs by U2, BEN HARPER and BLUE BOY. Members include DAVE BELL on six- and 12-string guitars, National steel guitars and playing tunings; MICKEY BARKER on vocals, drums and percussion; REX 'HONEY BOY' HILL on harmonica and saxophone and MICK KING on bass.

NEW IRISH PUB: DARBY Street will welcome a new Irish-style pub called FINNEGAN'S thanks to Newcastle City Council. The two story watering hole, at the corner of Darby and King streets, was approved for a 3am licence after a 40 minute debate by councillors. The $2million development will fill the vacant office spaces left by the former CES.

DANCE AGAIN: AFTER their best crowd at last month's VITAL BEATS dance party, organisers are turning up the heat this month at The Cambridge, with DJs KATE MONROE and CRAIG OBEY. The party, on Saturday, June 24, will feature main room DJs FRAGGLE, PATSAN, NEOTOKE and CHRIS CALM, with outdoor vibes from DJs SAM C, DELUXE, T-TIME, FIONA K and ARKETEK. JETS PASS OVER: IF you're hankering for a SCREAMING JETS fix this month you'll have to make the trip to Maitland's Clubhouse Hotel. The Newie rockers will be performing tracks from their upcoming album SCAM, on Tuesday June 20, and will not perform in Newcastle until the album is released in August.
