NEWCASTLE band OUTBACK hopes to take out the title of national champions at this month's NATIONAL BATTLE OF THE BUSH BANDS at Tamworth, for the third time in 10 years.

But BRETT LAMBKIN, DAVE FORSTER and GREG CARRUTHERS must first do the rounds at the Hunter's Australia Day festivals next Wednesday, January 26.

First up the group will perform an Australia Day breakfast at Riverside Park, Raymond Terrace, before heading to The Kent Hotel in Hamilton by 2pm.

Then by 7pm the group will begin performing into the dusk for the LAKE MACQUARIE AUSTRALIA DAY COUNCIL's at Speers Point Park celebrations.

Keyboard player, acoustic guitarist and lead vocalist BRETT LAMBKIN said the trio performed 'a mixture of bush music, traditional Australian songs and Irish/Scottish fiddle tunes'.

He cited traditional Australian tunes as CLICK GO THE SHEARS and BOTANY BAY as two examples.

The group also performed a fair amount of JOHN WILLIAMSON, JOHN DENVER and KENNY ROGERS. With Forster on fiddle and backing vocals, the group also performs THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA. Audience participation is encouraged, with Carruthers on drums and dance calling, known to hand over his lagerphone to the audience members from time to time.

The group will perform at the national titles, and at Tamworth's Good Companions Hotel from January 27-29, as part of the Australian Country Music Festival. TE
