Who: Circle Around the Sun
Where: Lass O' Gowrie
When: Wednesday December 20, 2000

WINNERS of the Bank Hotel band competition CIRCLE AROUND THE SUN will perform at the Lass O'Gowrie on Wednesday, December 20.

Judges awarded the contest to the eclectic-sounding quartet which combines an unlikely mix of African, Middle Eastern and hard rock influences in its original songs.

Lead singer AMIE SHEARMAN said the band would use part of its prize - recording time at FOREFRONT PRODUCTIONS - to release a CD of original material early next year.

'Our sound comes from a lot of world music, from Indian to Middle Eastern, African and even Irish,' she said.

'We also play contemporary hits from the 1960s to the 1990s, alternative covers and originals.'

Members of the group include former MISCHLING guitarist CRAIG SMITH, former ABUSEMENT PARK player LARRY HUGHES on banjo, mandolin, guitar and fiddle, and former BIG YANGO and TIME BAND member DAVE BUTLER on congos, percussion and vocals.

The 10-month-old group has performed at Paterson, Wollombi, Cobar, Tamworth, Maitland and Newcastle. TE
