Band sings own brand of blues

Who: Third Degree
Where: Northern Star Hotel
When: Friday August 11, 2000

SYDNEY based 'rock and blues' trio THIRD DEGREE is acknowledged by musicians, blues fans and record labels as one of Australia's best.

Playing Friday night at the Northern Star Hotel, the band's first CD TRY BEFORE YOU BUY, after the old SAVOY BROWN hit, is hailed as a resounding critical success.

Blues guitarist JEFF LANG describes Third Degree as a knockout in the live arena as well.

'They're a real band with the sort of unity you only get from having to go out and turn it on night after night,' he says.

And that's exactly what guitarist DARREN JACK, drummer CHRIS NOBLE and bass player GRANT CUMMERFORD have been doing for the past few years.

Third Degree has played at all of Australia's major blues festivals.

Jack earned his first big break, aged 22, when Third Degree was picked up as the support act for the national tour of CANNED HEAT. Supports for GEORGE THOROGOOD, LONG JOHN BALDRY, CHAIN and others followed.

Although he favours 'heavy overdrive and a clean guitar sound' Jack is 'not another JIMI HENDRIX or STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN clone'.

SYDNEY BLUES SOCIETY says the 10-track CD, featuring four originals, possesses 'that definite magic sixties feel of THE YARDBIRDS, ANIMALS and JOHN MAYALL'. And JOHN DURR, from the prestigious Australian blues label BLACK MARKET MUSIC, describes the group as 'the most promising young Australian band to emerge in the blues scene'.
