Guitar master set for his CD launch

Who: Gareth Koch
Where: Pepperina
When: Thursday August 26, 1999

AUSTRALIAN classical guitar virtuoso GARETH KOCH lives in Newcastle where he is lecturer in guitar in the faculty of music at the University of Newcastle.

But Koch is renowned all over the world as one of the most respected and sought-after performers and teachers of his generation.

Tomorrow night, at Pepperina Books and Music, Bolton St, Newcastle, Koch will launch his CD JOURNEY TO THE OTHERWORLD, featuring solo guitar music inspired by the medieval myths and legends.

The pieces, entirely composed and arranged by Koch, are based on ancient yet evocative melodies.

Titles such as THE LUSTFUL ABBOT, TASTE OF THE FOUNTAIN, KNIGHT OF THE SWAN, THE WILD HUNT, THE LOST GRAIL, MERLIN'S PROPHECY and CRUSADE SONG invite the listener 'into the realm of magic and the otherworld'.

Journey To The Otherworld features an astonishing display of guitar techniques including drums and percussion, all created on the guitar itself, and heard to spectacular effect on this live CD.

The guitar album has crossover appeal to lovers of a wide variety of styles, from classical and flamenco, which is unique in itself, through to world music and rock styles.

Koch is renowned throughout the guitar world for his remarkable solo guitar transcription of ORFF'S CARMINA BURANA, originally scored for a large orchestra and choir.

Both of Koch's recording are released through the ARTWORKS label, distributed through the massive multi-national record company UNIVERSAL CLASSICAL. The free live performance begins at 6pm. TE
